1966年に日本初の日本画専門の美術館として開館。2009年渋谷区広尾に移転。近代・現代日本画を中心に、古画、浮世絵、油彩画、6点の重要文化財を含む約1800点を所蔵し、年5～6回の展覧会にて順次公開しています。創立者・山﨑種二の「美術を通じて社会、特に文化のために貢献する」という理念を受け継ぎ、理想的な環境づくりと質の高い展覧会を通じて、日本画の魅力を発信する美術館です。
